I recently read "Magic & Mirrors: A Starry Hollow Witches Book" by Annabel Chase, a delightful series filled with mystical creatures, love, witchery, and comedy. The story revolves around a town under a spell where everyone’s appearance reflects their inner self-perception. This concept of mirroring has fascinated me for years. It has been a powerful tool for self-discovery, revealing my true sense of worthiness and self-worth. It perfectly complements the reflections I help others see in themselves.
Imagine you are in the magical town of Starry Hollow, under this spell. How would you see yourself? Would you appear as a bright and polished version of yourself, or would the features you criticize and condemn be exaggerated, revealing how harshly you view yourself?
Consider these examples from the book:
One character saw herself as tiny and insignificant, and under the spell, she physically shrank to the size of a figurine. She couldn't perform her usual tasks and had to rely on others, symbolizing how seeing ourselves as small can make us feel powerless and dependent. Do you sometimes see yourself as smaller and less capable than you really are?
Another character, a tiny leprechaun, viewed himself as ruggedly handsome and strong. Despite his actual size, his inner perception gave him the confidence to excel in his job and life. His self-assuredness was a stark contrast to his physical appearance. Do you allow your inner strength to shine through, regardless of how you look on the outside?
A beloved character saw herself through a harsh lens, imagining a tiny wart on her nose as a huge, noticeable blemish. Her self-critical view exaggerated her features, distorting her self-image. Do you magnify your flaws, seeing yourself in a way that’s harsher than reality?
Some beastly characters, like shifters and vampires, were stuck in their beast forms, reflecting their inner struggles and dualities. This transformation illustrated how the parts of ourselves we hide are still a part of us. What inner struggles do you face that you feel are always with you?
Interestingly, some characters saw themselves so truthfully and positively that their outer appearance didn’t change at all. This authenticity, free from judgment, shame, guilt, or the need for perfection, is something we all strive for.
Reflecting on my own inner truths, I realize that if my self-perceived flaws—like pimples, pale skin, greasy hair, or an unideal tummy—were exaggerated, I would be horrified! This book has reminded me to focus on the best parts of myself instead.
Here are some tips to improve your self-reflection:
Create a timeline of accomplishments: Write down all your achievements, big and small. Refer to this list when you feel uncertain about your capabilities.
Embrace changes: Recognize that changes in your body are signs of maturity, laughter, and fun. Appreciate the journey your body has taken.
Focus on yourself: Understand that people are often too busy with their own lives to notice your imperfections. Think about how many people you cross each day and how little you dwell on their appearances.
